Peace of Art Strengthens Cultural and Diplomatic Ties in Germany

Dresden, Germany | 6 June 2025

On 6 June 2025, Mahdi Yahya, Founder and Chairman of Peace of Art International, participated in the official opening of the new constituency office of Matthias Ecke, Member of the European Parliament representing Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), in Dresden, Germany. The event provided an opportunity for dialogue between political representatives, civil society leaders, and community stakeholders committed to strengthening international cooperation, intercultural understanding, and democratic engagement.

Mahdi Yahya attended the event following an official invitation from Mr. Ecke and was joined by Aziz Bashouri, labor market expert and Deputy Chair of the Advisory Council for Migrants in the Dresden City Parliament. The gathering brought together individuals from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds, creating a platform for meaningful discussions on European cooperation, migration, cultural exchange, and community development.

During the meeting, Yahya presented Mr. Ecke with a Lebanese olive tree, a powerful symbol of peace, resilience, and friendship. The gesture reflected the values that Peace of Art International promotes through its peacebuilding initiatives and cultural diplomacy efforts. The olive tree has long represented coexistence and dialogue in Mediterranean cultures and served as a meaningful expression of goodwill and mutual respect.

As part of the exchange, Yahya extended an invitation to Mr. Ecke to visit Lebanon and Syria in the future to gain firsthand insight into the region’s cultural diversity, social challenges, and ongoing efforts toward peacebuilding and community development. The invitation aimed to encourage stronger cultural and diplomatic ties between Europe and the Middle East while promoting greater understanding among societies facing shared global challenges.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage as a bridge between peoples. Aziz Bashouri presented Mr. Ecke with a model of the historic Hama waterwheels, one of Syria’s most recognizable cultural symbols and a testament to the region’s rich history and engineering heritage. The gift served as a reminder of the importance of protecting cultural identity while fostering international dialogue and cooperation.

Participants discussed the role of cultural diplomacy in strengthening relationships between communities and nations. In an increasingly interconnected world, cultural initiatives play a vital role in promoting understanding, combating stereotypes, and creating opportunities for collaboration across borders. Through art, dialogue, and people-to-people engagement, organizations such as Peace of Art International contribute to building trust and encouraging constructive relationships between different cultures.

For Peace of Art International, the meeting represented more than a ceremonial occasion. It reflected the organization’s broader mission of connecting communities through dialogue, creativity, and shared values. By engaging with policymakers, community leaders, and civil society actors, Peace of Art seeks to create opportunities for cooperation that extend beyond national boundaries and contribute to sustainable peace.

The event also underscored the importance of civil society organizations in supporting international understanding. Through initiatives focused on youth empowerment, peacebuilding, cultural exchange, and social cohesion, Peace of Art International has consistently advocated for stronger connections between Europe and the Middle East, emphasizing the role of citizens and local communities in shaping positive change.

As Peace of Art International continues to expand its international partnerships, the meeting in Dresden marked another step toward strengthening cultural diplomacy and fostering meaningful dialogue between European and Middle Eastern stakeholders. It demonstrated how symbolic gestures, shared experiences, and open conversations can contribute to building bridges between societies and advancing common goals of peace, cooperation, and mutual respect.

The visit reaffirmed Peace of Art International’s belief that diplomacy is not only conducted through governments and institutions but also through culture, art, and human connections. By bringing together individuals from different backgrounds and perspectives, such encounters help create the foundations for stronger partnerships and a more peaceful future.
