Advancing peacebuilding, dialogue, civic engagement, and community resilience through grassroots leadership, social innovation, and international collaboration.
Work
For more than a decade, Mahdi Yahya has worked at the intersection of peacebuilding, dialogue, civic engagement, leadership development, and social innovation. His work seeks to strengthen peaceful coexistence, empower communities, and create opportunities for individuals—particularly young people—to become active contributors to positive social change.
Through grassroots initiatives, educational programs, cultural projects, international partnerships, and public engagement, he has worked with communities across Lebanon and beyond to promote dialogue, resilience, democratic participation, and human dignity.
Peacebuilding
Peacebuilding has been at the heart of Mahdi Yahya’s work since the founding of Peace of Art International in 2016.
Working in Lebanon’s North Bekaa region—an area often affected by marginalization, social tensions, economic challenges, and the consequences of conflict—he has developed community-based approaches that promote reconciliation, nonviolent conflict transformation, and social cohesion.
His work focuses on creating safe spaces where individuals and communities can engage constructively, address shared challenges, and develop peaceful alternatives to violence, extremism, exclusion, and division.
Dialogue Across Divides
Mahdi believes that dialogue is one of the most powerful tools for building trust and strengthening communities.
Throughout his work, he has brought together people from different religious, social, cultural, and political backgrounds to engage in meaningful conversations and collaborative activities. Through dialogue initiatives, workshops, cultural exchanges, and community projects, participants are encouraged to move beyond stereotypes and discover common ground.
His approach promotes understanding, mutual respect, and cooperation while transforming differences into opportunities for learning and collective action.
Youth Leadership & Civic Engagement
Youth Leadership & Civic Engagement
Young people have always been at the center of Mahdi’s vision for sustainable peace and democratic development.
Through leadership programs, mentorship initiatives, civic education activities, and youth-led projects, he has supported hundreds of young people in developing the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to become active citizens and community leaders.
His work encourages youth participation in public life, volunteerism, social responsibility, democratic engagement, and grassroots leadership, helping young people move from being observers of change to becoming leaders of change.
Democracy & Community Participation
Mahdi advocates for inclusive and participatory societies where individuals have the opportunity to contribute to decisions that affect their communities.
His initiatives promote democratic values, active citizenship, civic awareness, human rights, and community participation. By encouraging dialogue between citizens, local actors, institutions, and civil society organizations, he works to strengthen democratic culture and foster greater ownership of local development processes.
His participation at the European Parliament during the International Day of Democracy reflected his longstanding commitment to youth participation, civic engagement, and democratic values.
Community Resilience
Communities facing crisis require more than short-term assistance; they require the capacity to adapt, recover, and thrive.
Mahdi’s work focuses on strengthening community resilience through education, leadership development, humanitarian action, social support, and local capacity-building. His initiatives help individuals and communities respond to social, economic, and political challenges while building stronger networks of solidarity and cooperation.
Through Peace of Art International and its partners, he has supported initiatives that address both immediate needs and long-term community development.
Arts-Based Peacebuilding
One of the defining features of Mahdi’s work is the use of arts and culture as tools for peacebuilding and social transformation.
Through music, visual arts, photography, theatre, filmmaking, storytelling, and creative expression, he has created innovative spaces where young people can express their ideas, process their experiences, and engage with others in constructive ways.
This approach has helped bridge social divisions, amplify marginalized voices, promote dialogue, and encourage participation among individuals who may otherwise feel excluded from traditional civic spaces.
His work has demonstrated how creativity can become a powerful force for inclusion, understanding, and positive social change.
Intercultural & Interreligious Dialogue
In increasingly diverse and interconnected societies, building understanding across cultures and beliefs is essential.
Mahdi has actively promoted intercultural and interreligious dialogue through local initiatives, regional networks, and international forums. His work encourages encounters between people from different backgrounds while fostering respect, coexistence, and shared responsibility.
By creating opportunities for collaboration across communities, he seeks to strengthen social cohesion and contribute to more inclusive and peaceful societies.
Leadership for Social Change
Mahdi’s leadership philosophy is rooted in service, empowerment, collaboration, and community ownership.
As founder of Peace of Art International and the WARD Coalition, he has worked to strengthen civil society, support emerging leaders, and build networks capable of creating sustainable impact.
His leadership focuses on enabling others to succeed, creating opportunities for participation, and investing in people as the most important drivers of social transformation.
Through his work, speaking engagements, mentorship, and international collaborations, he continues to support a growing generation of changemakers committed to peace, dialogue, democracy, and human dignity.
